Portuguese azulejo: the small ceramic tile that tells the history of Portugal

Portuguese tiles are one of the most recognized images of Portugal. They are on city façades, churches, palaces, stations, and inside many Portuguese homes.

The word "azulejo" comes from the Arabic azzelij, a term associated with "small polished stone". Moorish influence brought to the Iberian Peninsula a taste for geometric patterns and decorated surfaces, especially through the mosaics used in Islamic palaces.

The first tiles arrived in Portugal at the end of the 15th century, coming from Seville. By the 16th century, workshops emerged in Lisbon that began producing tiles on Portuguese territory, using faience techniques influenced by Italian tradition.

Over time, Portugal transformed the tile into its own artistic language. Panels began to depict religious scenes, historical episodes, landscapes, and daily life moments. Tiles ceased to be merely decorative and became part of the identity of Portuguese architecture.

The famous blue on a white background appeared later, inspired by Chinese porcelain and Dutch tile work. It became one of the most emblematic images of Portuguese culture, although throughout history there have also been green, yellow, brown, and polychromatic tiles.

Pombaline tiles after the 1755 earthquake

After the 1755 earthquake, the so-called Pombaline tiles helped rebuild Lisbon. By the 19th century, tiles gained even more prominence on urban façades, especially in cities like Lisbon, Porto, and Aveiro.

Portuguese tiles today

Today, they continue to be one of Portugal's greatest symbols. Resilient, timeless, and full of character, Portuguese tiles manage to preserve centuries of history while still being part of modern homes and spaces.
